US Olive Oil Imports

20 years ago, US Olive oil imports amounted to 123,000 metric tons of which 13% came into the country in bulk form. By last year, imports had grown to 312,000 metric tons of which 41% was in bulk form for packaging by local merchants. During the same period, US olive oil production grew from near zero, to 10,000 metric tons, while US consumption almost tripled. Italy still leads in packaged imports with 42% (of which 24% is extra virgin and 5% organic), while Spain which follows with 11.6%, leads in the bulk category imports. Greece, the world’s 3rd largest producer registers with 1.4% of packaged imports, followed by Tunisia with 1.3% and Turkey with 1%.
